London 2015 - Getting There, Day One and Two

I know, I know, I know....I haven't blogged in forever.  Major life events have come and gone without nary a word of documentation.  Spring Break vacation to Arizona, Hubby snapping two of his hamstring muscles off the bone (OUCH!), termite invasion, huge job change, Bob's shoulder replacement, epic tire changing story with the four musketeers at ASU, the list goes on and on.

But, I just got back from a great trip to London and I am going to skip all the topics mentioned above and just go straight to London recap before brain atrophy sets in and I can't remember anything! That has kind of already happened with the Spring Break vacation because it was like four weeks ago and that is a lifetime when you are old.

Let's jump in!

This was a Christmas gift girls trip with my sister-in-law and two nieces.  Thanks Hubby - these experiences are so much fun!  The same crew that crashed New York with me last year headed to London this year!  I started out flying solo to Bama so I could travel to London with the girls.  I was lucky enough to have a quick dinner with some of my favorites.  Bob, Lana and my brother Guk!

Bob is only six days out from his shoulder replacement surgery in this photo but getting along great!  He is lucky he can still write with his right hand so he can keep up with all his doctor's appointments on his calendar!   We had a nice meal and Guk dropped me off at The Bad Farm for a good night's rest in anticipation of a long day of travel the next day!

The next day we got to the airport in plenty of time (cause that is how I roll!) and had plenty of time to eat and take a selfie!  Super excited!

First flight was a short one from Bama to Charlotte!   We had a four and a half hour layover before we headed across the pond.

Hubby treated us to some Admiral's Club passes, which was really a nice way to spend a long layover. It was quiet and there were comfortable chairs.  PLUS, there were snacks and free alcohol.  I am in like Flynn on that combo!

Out in the chaos of the International terminal we boarded our flight at 10:25 p.m. EST.  Flying through the night for seven hours (with a six hour time difference) to arrive in London at 11:25 a.m. London time!  The plan was to sleep on the flight and hit the ground running when we landed!

Only problem is...there are other people on the flight.  And it was hard to sleep.  Especially when about twelve passengers started barfing.  Many of those in our very row or close by.  It was an epidemic.  In fact, about an hour and half from landing in London they came over the intercom and asked if there was a doctor or a nurse on board the flight.  Thankfully there was and she tended to a girl who was apparently really, really sick.  They asked us to stay in our seats when the flight landed so the paramedics could board the plane and get one of the passengers off first.  She was a young woman, maybe twenty years old.  I felt terrible for her.  And I also was worried.  Hoping so badly that I didn't eat what they ate on the flight or breathe in whatever nasty bug was kicking their collective butts!  Needless to say, the flight over did not go to plan - but that big metal bird did land safely and we were officially in London!  YAY!

Here we are trying to figure out the underground subway system to transport us fourteen miles from Heathrow airport to the Hilton.  We made a fatal mistake here.  We ended up getting off the subway a stop too soon.  That meant we walked through the busy streets of London dragging our damn suitcases for a mile! As the hotel came in to sight, I could feel the tendons in my arm stretching to their maximum while I cussed myself for bringing way to many clothes and why did I bring my laptop!  UGH!  As we reached the corner to cross over to the hotel we walked right by a damn underground station.  We would have almost been dropped off in the hotel lobby if we had just ridden it one more stop!!!  ARGH!!!  We had much to learn about this public transportation system!

We got checked in, dropped off the luggage and hit the streets of London.  First stop...Starbucks.  We are such Americans!   Non-sleeping, waiting to see if we start barfing, just drug fifty pound bags for a mile, caffeine needing Americans.  Coffee never tasted so good!

We headed for Kensington Park.  Found the infamous Peter Pan statue and strolled further to see the other sites.   The girls were much happier than this picture conveys.  Perhaps they have not finished their coffee?

Sun shining down on a steeple across a beautiful pond.  The weather was gorgeous!

Flowers were blooming everywhere.

From Kensington Park we made our way over to Nottinghill.

There were lots of little shops.  This cool store had hundreds of old sewing machines in the window.  Very cool.

We found a pub where we experienced our first pint of beer!  It was excellent!

And fish and chips!   Delicious!  Way better than I expected.

We slow strolled it back to the hotel and hit the sack pretty early.  Long day with very little rest.  A few things to note:  Toilets in London are weird.  Our hotel toilet required four or five pumps of the handle to prime it before it would flush.  When it flushed the water came out like a garden hose.  Weird.  Toilet paper is not soft.  Mattress are firm to the extreme.  There is not a coffee pot in the room, but there is an electric kettle to heat water.  Coffee is instant.  My cell phone was not configured for cellular data in Europe.  Not prepared for that.  We also did not plan very well for the electric converters.  We only had one.  There were four of us.  Four cell phones, two laptops, three cameras, blowdryer, etc.  It was a revolving outlet getting everything charged.  Advil PM is the shiz!  The complete and total shiz!  I was out like a light and slept so soundly!  Good thing because we were up and out the door early!

Malarie studied the Underground Map and schedule and we headed down to Buckingham Palace for the changing of the guard.

The subway was really nice...although a bit on the pricey side.  Could not even imagine trying to drive in this congested mess on the wrong side of the road so we just happily paid for an all day pass each and every day!

Picture taking and map reading.  There was a ton of both.

Look!  A British Phone Booth!  In real life!

The park in front of Buckingham Palace was GORGEOUS!  In bloom with beautiful flowers.

We walked by the barracks and the Royal Guard band was outside.  They cranked up the instruments and started playing New York New York!  So festive!

Police were on horses.

Buckingham Palace.  Big crowd there for the daily changing of the guard.
The flying flag meant the Queen was in.  She did not come out to greet us.  I was a bit disappointed!

Seriously.  So pretty.  Beautiful weather day!

Guards marching into the grounds.  We were not close, but we could see them!

And here comes the band!

Very cool!

This girl loves London.

This girl loves mailboxes!
Our rural route carrier found a mailbox quicker than you could say "What is your zip code?"

We walked around the palace, hoping to get a glimpse of the gardens, but all we got was a long walk around a brick wall.  Not our best choice, but we did pop into the Queen's store and buy a few souvenirs!

Best picture of the trip!  Isn't that beautiful?

This girl loves maps and planning trips.  She is really good at it!  Tour guide extraordinaire!

Next up, Westminster Abbey.  Beautiful church and we decided to go inside for a tour!

Public Service Announcement:  This is not so much a church as it is a tomb!  Lots of dead guys in Westminster Abbey.  I was not prepared for that!  Every square inch of this place is covered in a tomb of one kind or another.  I mean, every square inch!  It is crammed full of statues and monuments and plaques.  Not so much with baby Jesus!  I was looking all over for him!   It was interesting for sure!

Headed back over to Big Ben and the London Eye.
All four of us were in agreement that we were NOT riding that big ferris wheel!

We found a sweet vegan restaurant to grab a late lunch at a place called Mildred's.
It was tiny and so cute.

More importantly, the food was AMAZING!  At least my homemade pasta stuffed with pumpkin and covered in a mushroom wine sauce drizzled with truffle oil was AWESOME!!!  SO, SO, SO good.  Best meal of the trip for me!

Next up on the agenda was Covent Garden Market.
Sweet little shopping area that was bustling with activity.

We slow strolled back through some super cute streets of London, rode part way back on a double decker bus and made it back to our hotel early evening.  The girls went out to grab something quick to snack on at a little shop near the hotel and we ate in the room and planned the next days activities!  So far, so good!  Another Advil PM and sweet dreams were mine!  I like sleeping in London!

Next few days of London adventure coming up in a future post!

Monopoly Mastermind

Chip killed me in Monopoly.  I think this is the first game of Monopoly I have ever played that went on for two days and ended with me owing rent in the amount of $1080 and having only $26 in my bank.

He demolished me.  Please let me introduce you to Chip Trump, Real Estate Mogul:

Play him at your own risk.

OW! A Jalapeño in My Eye!

Dang it!  Not a good way to start off the week.

This morning, I made a delicious breakfast scramble of onions, potatoes, peppers, broccoli and sausage...and at the last minute decided to add some fresh jalapeño.   It definitely kicked up the spice, but damn if I didn't just touch my eye with my hand and it is on fire.  Ow, Ow, Ow.

Is that even how you spell "ow"?  Looks weird.

You know what else is painful?

Your twelve year old putting a Monopoly beat down on you!

Me and Chip started a Monopoly game Sunday afternoon about 1:30.  By 2:30, I had this kid down to $2.  I was doing a little bit of trash talking and maybe took the above picture in celebration.  Look at his two sad little $1 bills.

As soon as this picture was taken, Chip made a Donald Trump worthy comeback and when we paused the game at 4:00 he had the Monopoly real estate well in hand.  We kept the board set up over night and grabbed about 10 minutes this morning to continue our game.  He eventually had to leave for school, thank goodness.  I honestly probably only have two rolls left before I am completely bankrupt!  That little turkey!

It got his Monday morning off to a great start.  Mine, not so much!

My eye and my Monopoly pride are stinging!

Hope this is not indicative of the week ahead!

Wide Open Weekend

A busy weekend turned into a complete bust by the yucky weather!

The school band concert was cancelled on Friday night due to weather!  Chip stayed after school for warm-ups and they were just about to load the bus for the Performing Arts Center when all school activities were cancelled due to the potential for freezing rain.  So, up to school I went to pick him up.  No concert.  Boo!   I don't think the roads got too bad, but I am always glad they err on the side of caution.

A little later that night, the weekend baseball tournament was also cancelled.  That was also a good thing.  Who wants to play baseball when it is raining/sleeting and the temperature feels like it is in the teens?  Not anyone in this house!  I was dreading just sitting out there watching!  Brrr.

So with all the cancellations a busy weekend made a dramatic turn to being wide open with nothing on the schedule.  With all the downtime, I managed to get to the gym for a spin class on Saturday, which was fantastic!  I am so surprised how much I am loving spin.  It is physically hard - but not hard on your body, if that makes sense.  Knees don't hurt.  Hips don't hurt.  Just high cardio - lots of sweat - plenty of resistance for the leg workout.  I leave spin feeling energized, not zapped or exhausted.  It is a pretty cool thing!

I was going to upload some of my Whole30 meals - but I think y'all are probably sick of looking at my food!  I will spare you the photos, but will tell you that over the last few days I have made Tarragon Chicken with Coconut Milk, Salmon Patties, Zucchini Fritters, cauliflower rice, ghee (butter with no dairy), Coconut Shrimp, Shepard's Pie and bulletproof coffee.  Found some new favorites which will definitely be repeats.

I feel great after eating Whole30 for two weeks.  That means no flour (no bread, no pasta), no sugar (not even honey!), no grains (no rice, no quinoa), no alcohol (WAAHHHH!), no dairy (no milk, no cheese, no butter) - NO CHEATING!  The absolutely best, most awesome part is that the cravings are gone!  Beginning of Day 14 and I am not sure why I wouldn't eat like this forever.  Truth...Day 4 and 5 were awful.  Cravings were intense for sugar, flour, cheese....and it made me angry.  Once I got past those two days it has been pretty awesome.  The only downside to speak of:

The damn dishes.  When you are cooking every meal the sink is never empty.  NEVER EVER EVER!   I need to take out some stock in Cascade.

Another benefit of the open weekend was my first trip to Trader Joe's.  My girl, Beth is also doing the Whole30 challenge and we went together in search of Whole30 compliant food items.  It was great. Here is my TJ's loot:

The store was much smaller than I thought it would be, but packed with a variety of items.  The employees were very nice and entertaining.  We will definitely go back!  Not pictured in this healthy assortment of items was a jar of Cookie Butter I purchased for the boys.  It was heavily touted online as a not to miss Trader Joe's favorite.  According to Chip...that is NOT a lie, it was good.

I have been in the kitchen a bunch and it is nice to have some new and interesting ingredients to play with.

Can't believe it is March 1st today!   My goodness, January and February went by in a flash!  Let's hope Spring rolls in with some nice, mild weather for at least a while!

I hope you had a great weekend and are looking forward to a nice week ahead!

Top Ten Tidbits

1.  Chip was downright peeved that it didn't ice Sunday night.  Not even a two hour delay on Monday!  Not fair.  But then....it was dry and cold this morning and they blessed us with a two hour delay today!  Smiles all around!

2.  I went to the mall with Hubby on Saturday.  He was looking for new pants for his smaller butt.  He has been wearing 36's and bought 33's.

3.  We saw this on the way to the mall.

Can you imagine Astro strapped to Hubby's chest?  Let's do it!

4.  Day 10 of Whole 30 is wwwaaayyyyyy better than Day 5 and 6.   Cravings gone.  I think the sugar detox has been completed.  THANK GOODNESS!!!!   More challenges ahead, I am sure but super grateful to be through the first ten days.

5.  New recipes I have tried this week....Chocolate Chili, Coconut Chicken Tenders, Green Goddess Cauliflower Rice, Pork Loin with Cabbage and Apples.  Trying to keep it interesting.  Definitely keeping the dishwasher busy.

6.  Harry is feeling better!  Do you know what that means?  That means Harry is back to running the roads like a person who runs the roads a lot.  Softball games, spring training, ASU baseball, basketball, interviewing this person, writing this article, this journalism meeting....all over the place.  He said on Sunday he drove to Tempe five times.  He is back to normal!

7.  Chip's first track meet is this Thursday.  Friday is a Band Performance at the PAC.  Saturday and Sunday baseball tournament.  Chip is a busy little boy too!

8.  Summer vacation planning is underway.

9.  Have you ever seen Good Mythical Morning?  It is an internet show that Chip watches.  Two funny guys are the hosts.  They do some great stuff.  Check it out sometime.

10.  Bob is reading Unbroken.  That is a legit book.  Non-Fiction!  What?  Who is this guy?

Laughing Gas and Other News

It is already Friday??  Holy cow, that week went fast!!

Harry is feeling better! Yay! The clinic diagnosed him with strep throat (even though the test came back negative twice) and started him on antibiotics.  He has been feeling better each and every day since!  No more rash.  Getting some energy back.  So happy about that!

In other happy news, I had laughing gas (nitrous oxide) at the dentist for the first time this week!  Where has this been my whole life??  I am actually thinking about going back to school to be a dentist so I can put one of those gas machines in my house!  Loved it! I was given the gas because they need to replace an antique filling in my mouth that wasn't doing its job anymore. You read that correctly...I have a filling that is old enough to be classified as an antique.  Son of a.....  But give me the gas and who gives a rip how old you are!  On the flip side of antique, I also still have one of my baby teeth.  So there.  I need to have a crown replaced on the other side of my mouth and now I can't wait to get back in the dentist chair!  Signed up for an appointment next week!  I may have the nicest teeth on the block now that I know about the gas!

Chip stayed home sick a couple of days this week with a cold.  Just feeling snotty, puny and yuck.  Never ran a fever or anything, but just loafed around for a couple of days.  He is feeling better too.    That is a good thing because they already started Track and Field this week. They do not mess around with much transition between sporting events in middle school!  He is going to participate in the Shot Put and maybe Discus.  He came home from the first day of practice and wanted to go by a ball to practice with.  The kid is all in.

My sister, The Nice One, turned fifty this week!  What???  50???  Can that be right?  I swear we were just like 5 and 6 running all around Nike Street, building forts in the woods with pine straw, roller skating, watching Gilligan's Island and the Brady Bunch eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with Fritos on them!  How the hell is she 50?  And if she is fifty, that means I am not far behind her!  ACK!!  Unfortunately, I think she spent some of her birthday stuck in some horrible traffic trying to get home from work in a snow storm.  She made it, and was welcomed home with a lovely dinner, but it was a long drive!  Happy Half Century to The Nice One!

Let's talk for a minute about my Whole30 Food Challenge.  I rocked Day 1, 2 and 3.  Lots of good wholesome food.  No problem. Then came Day 4 and 5.  Breakfast was great but the rest of the day sucked the big one.  So hard.  Day 6 has not been too bad.  I think the detox process was at its peek on Wednesday and Thursday and I was HANGRY!  That is angry because you are hungry (not pretty)!  Except, I wasn't really hungry.  I didn't want food.  I wanted chocolate.  And wine.  And pizza.  And beer.  And pretzels.  And a huge hunk of french bread.  And cheese.  Any cheese!  And to gulp it all down with a big tall glass of ice cold milk!  It was bad.  I was craving everything I wasn't eating. I was complaining about my cravings to my girl Beth and she sent me this message:

I laughed so hard!  It just cracked me up!  I responded to her and said "I have got to send this to someone!  Act like you haven't seen it before!"   So damn funny!   She knows me well!

So want to see some pictures of the whole foods I am eating? No?  Too bad.  I am going to post them anyway!

I am loving breakfast.  Eggs and potatoes.  Shut the front door.  All day.  Every day.  No problem.

The other meals are good.  Just not breakfast good.  And they are also not pizza, chocolate or wine.  That is hard to face some days!

But good news!  I had a great day today.  Finally, not daydreaming about all the stuff I am going to eat on Day 31!  That is part of the Whole30 deal, to get detoxed from sugar, grains, dairy, all the processed junk.  Whew, that is hard!  Physically and psychologically!  I do believe I am through the worst of it!  Smooth sailing from here!

I assume you can tell I am eating on paper plates in all the pictures above.  I have dirtied every pan and cooking vessel in my house with this challenge!  Dishes for days!  All worth it though. Feeling good!

On that good note, I am going to wrap this up.  Exciting Friday night, right?  We know how to party around here!  Hope your weekend ahead is awesome!
